INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA

2001

This is the Stadtturm - the City's highest tower. It was just around the corner from our hotel. When we arrived in Innsbruck, we were taken aback: we had expected a relatively small town. What a surprise! It was a rather large city and the train station was not in the most desirable part of it.
But a few blocks away, we came to the area of our hotel - one of the oldest in the City - and discovered a very rich and beautiful place nestled in a valley of the Alps.
From the city Tower, we could look out on the clean, crisp town associated with the Winter Olympics. Here you can see the twin towers of St. James Cathedral. Almost everywhere we looked we saw vistas of incomparable beauty.

Our hotel had once been home to Goethe - and too many other writers, artists and musicians to name. Our room was on the fourth floor, on the left side of the building as pictured here (two windows!). It was spacious and very modern despite the age of the building.

We enjoyed walking all over Innsbruck. But we also got out of town by means of one of the numerous ski lifts. Here we are on our way up above Innsbruck to the mountain known as Nordketter. At the top, we broke through the clouds and had a breathtaking view of the valley below and the mountains on every side . . . and a great lunch!
