WOLFSBURG, GERMANY

2001

A part of our trip included a visit to Wolfsburg, Germany and the home of the Riecks. Thorsten Rieck was our "adopted son"  as an exchange student in high school days while we lived in Glendale, California. Thorsten greeted us at the railway station in Wolfsburg. Here he is seen with girlfriend Nadine, and his parents, Mario and Traude.
We were pleased to be able to spend a couple of days with the Riecks at their very comfortable home. The weather was brisk, with a smattering of snow on the ground.
Mario is the proprietor of a small chain of electronics stores. He carries all sorts of general consumer electronics as well as supplies and equipment for specialists. This is the first place we got to see HDTV!

Wolfsburg is famous for being the home of the largest automobile manufacturing plant in the world - the headquarters of VW. On the sprawling campus at VW is something called AutoWorld. It is a combination exposition and amusement park, with tours of the highly automated VW plant. You can order a car in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon! (We didn't.)

We did however have an opportunity to try out some concept cars - or at least sit in them. The Riecks were very generous and very hospitable.
We were grateful at long last to be able to meet them and share their home.
